  7 Day Projects

PROJECT TITLE:

Planting the Music Tree

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: You will help survey the 2000 acres to decide on which areas will be planted, prepare the earth and clear away competing plants/shrubs, plant the trees, protect the trees from insect and animal attacks, and record the data for use in our research studies.
GOAL:  One of the principal goals of The Gaia Way is to replant sufficient numbers of Pau Brazil trees to insure the future of the Music Tree. We received approval to plant thousands of trees in such a manner as to simultaneously grow the trees and conduct research that will further help save this tree from extinction.
METHOD:  Teams will work from satellite maps and research protocols, then set out from base camp and survey, prepare, plant, and protect.
SUPPLIES: Each team will be supplied with global positioning devices, video and still cameras, voice recording devices, trees and digging material All teams must take an emergency kit (including a phone) on all excursions.
DATES: May 1 to 7 2005 and June 1 to 7 2006
LENGTH:  7 days
PHYSICAL LEVEL:  This is a demanding project. Participants will spend several hours a day working in the dense Atlantic Rainforest which can be hot and humid. Expect rain at this time of the year.
EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Beginner. All the skills necessary to participate in this project will be taught on site.
COST: $1500. Includes pick-up and return to Salvador International Airport, one-day stay at the Beach House, and all food and lodging. Does not include the costs of travel to and from Salvador (we can provide the name of a travel agent who will assist with this).  Please note: ALL COSTS, INCLUDING TRAVEL TO SALVADOR, MAY BE TAX DEDUCTIBLE ACCORDING TO U.S. TAX LAW.

PROJECT TITLE:

Exploring the Ecology of the Rivers of Bahia

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The Gaia Way has two major rivers (do Dona and Jaguaripe) and dozens of streams and creeks which run through it. Virtually none of this precious resource has been examined, charted, and evaluated. This project will explore the Rivers of Bahia, observing and recording the trees and wildlife adjacent to the rivers and the inhabitants of the rivers, taking periodic samples of the water for testing, and charting the locating of the main tributaries.
GOAL:  To record and provide on-going information about the state of rivers and adjacent environment on TheGaiaWay website. Also, to provide data to the Brazilian government (federal, state, and local).
METHOD:  Teams will set out from base camp every day in suitable water craft and/or on foot, following the river and collecting data. Lunch will be in the field.
SUPPLIES: Each team will be supplied with global positioning devices, video and still cameras, voice recording devices, and kits for collecting water samples. All teams must take an emergency kit (including a phone) on all excursions.
DATES: March 1 to 7 2006 and September 1 to 7 2006
LENGTH:  7 days
PHYSICAL LEVEL:  This is a very demanding project. Participants will spend several hours a day walking/paddling through dense Atlantic Rainforest which can be hot and humid.
EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Beginner. All the skills necessary to participate in this project will be taught on site. Previous experience rowing a boat will be helpful.
TAX LAW.

10 Day Projects

PROJECT TITLE:

  Trail Blazing

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The Gaia Way has nearly 1000 acres of virgin Atlantic Rainforest. Virtually none of this precious resource has been properly explored. This project will follow the existing trails throughout this area (originally made by loggers), upgrade them, measure them, and record the animal life and vegetation. From this basic development, future projects will use these trails for their important work.
GOAL:  To create a series of trails for the Gaia Way to pursue future projects.
METHOD:  Teams will set out from base camp every day and explore a given trail, recording its length and the animal/plant life along the way. As needed they will upgrade the path. Once completed, they will create sign posts and a directory to be used by future teams.
SUPPLIES:  Each team will be supplied with global positioning devices, video and still cameras, and voice recording devices. All teams must take an emergency kit (including a phone) on all excursions.
DATES: November 1 to 10, 2005 and December 1 to 10, 2005
LENGTH:  10 Days
PHYSICAL LEVEL:  This is a very demanding project. Participants will spend several hours a day walking through dense Atlantic Rainforest ( which can be hot and humid) and upgrading paths.

GOAL:  To protect the rainforest and insure its future.
METHOD:  Teams examine satellite photos and talk with local guides, then  set out from base camp every day and explore a given area, recording the condition.
SUPPLIES:  Each team will be supplied with global positioning devices, video and still cameras, and voice recording devices. All teams must take an emergency kit (including a phone) on all excursions.
